Revisiting Kindness and Confusion in Public Goods Experiments

There has been substantial recent interest in determining why there is cooperation in public goods experiments even in environments that provide all subjects with the incentive to free ride (see e.g., John O. Ledyard, 1995). Theories used to explain such cooperation generally posit either that subjects are “confused” in the sense that they make errors or do not understand the game’s incentives,...

Revisiting Kindness and Confusion in Public Goods Experiments: Comment∗

We present a novel experiment to evaluate the role of confusion in explaining the dynamics of contributions in public goods experiments. In a learning condition we keep the subjects confused by withholding the information that would be necessary for them to understand the game. The comparison of the results with those of a standard public goods treatment provides a lower bound for the influence...

Patient autonomy or patient confusion?

A couple of weekends ago a friend, Richard, popped in for a cup of tea – a very fit, active septuagenarian who rides the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour every year and has recently started running. Modelling Kindness∗

Episodic memory reconsolidation: updating or source confusion?

Reactivation of apparently stable, long-term memory can render it fragile, and dependent on a re-stabilisation process referred to as "reconsolidation". Recently we provided the first demonstration of reconsolidation effects in human episodic memory (Hupbach, Gomez, Hardt, & Nadel, 2007; Hupbach, Hardt, Gomez, & Nadel, 2008). Memory for a set of objects was modified by the presentation of a new...
